Arwen Arwen's Coronation Gown
Fabric

GREEN SILK VELVET

The body of the outer gown and the lower sleeves of the inner gown are made from a 'lime' colored green velvet. It has been reported that a silk velvet was used, but it is not clear to me if it was 100% silk velvet or a silk velvet with a rayon pile. The velvet was custom dyed for the costume in order to achieve a shade of green that would compliment Liv Tyler's skin tone.

TOPPS COSTUME CARD FABRIC SWATCH

The Topps costume collector card contains an authentic swatch of the green velvet used on Arwen's coronation gown.

VELVET COLOR -
MATCHING PANTONE COLORS

I used my Pantone Solid in RGB Guide to match color swatches to the velvet fabric. Two colors with a close match were 365 C and 358 C. Of the two swatches, 365 was closer but a bit too yellow. 358 was too blue, so a color half way between the two would be a perfect match.

I attempted with Photoshop to overlay one scan over the other to give an idea of what the true color might look like.

The other swatch that was nearly an exact match was Pantone 7486 C

*Note - if you have a graphics program and attempt to key in the RGB codes from the Pantone guide you will not get a color that is an exact match to those printed in the Pantone guide.

*Also note that the colors you see on your monitor will look different than the swatches I have in hand because every computer monitor is calibrated and adjusted differently.

VELVET COLOR -
MATCHING PAINT CHIP COLORS

Most people do not have access to Pantone RGB Guides, so I did my best to find matching paint chip colors at a local hardware store.

The Honeydew by Behr at Home Depot was the closest to Pantone 365 C but has too much yellow in it.

The Spring Fest by Glidden was almost an exact match to Pantone 358 C - but keep in mind that 358 C is too blue toned if you use this for matching fabric or dyes.

The Key Lime by Behr at Home Depot is the closest to Pantone 7486 C and the closest match to the fabric. However, this paint color is a little too bright in tone. The real fabric is a touch drabber - that can be achieved by adding a bit of gray in the mix OR a complimentary color. This paint chip could also provide a good reference for matching fabric or dye colors.

YELLOW UNDER SLEEVE

A sheer crinkled fabric is used on the under sleeve of the gown. The exact fiber content is unknown - but it looks like some type of crinkled chiffon or silk mousseline. There are iridescent fibers running through the yellow fabric, so it could be a blend of synthetic and silk.

YELLOW SLEEVE COLOR -
MATCHING PANTONE COLOR AND PAINT COLORS

I used my Pantone Solid in RGB Guide to match color swatches to the yellow crinkled fabric, but getting a match to this color was difficult.

The closest color was 7401 C but it was slightly too dark.

Champagne Sparkle by Glidden is the closest paint color to 7401 C.

Popcorn White by Glidden was a bit lighter than 7401 C and provides a good color reference.

Cotton Blossom by Glidden is then next lightest tint from Champagne Sparkle, so it could also be a good color reference for the under sleeves (but it may be too light).

RIGHT PHOTO: PLACEMENT OF PEARLS SHOWN IN VIOLET. PLACEMENT OF BUGLE BEADS IN BLUE

LACE FABRIC

The upper arms of the sleeves and the upper bodice of the inner gown are made from an intricately embroidered and beaded lace. It seems to be a corded type of lace with a raised texture. The raised cording of the lace and embroidery are actually a light yellow color. The backing of the fabric is green. I could not tell if the lace was sheer and laid over a separate green backing or if it was all one piece of fabric.

The pearls and some of the clear bugle beads on the lace appear to be part of the original fabric design. The photo to the right illustrates their placement. (Clear Irridescent bugle beads are 2-3mm in size).
